Day 3: San Angel and Coyoacán

Morning visit to San Angel
Gift.
Secret information: upon booking this itinerary the Travel Designer reveals additional information with tips.

San Angel is probably the most beautiful neighborhood in all Mexico City. The name of the neighborhood comes from a school called San Angel Martir, founded by the Carmelite order in XVII, which is now a museum.

San Ángel is known for its history, architecture and religious monuments. Frida Kahlo and Diego Riviera also lived in this neighborhood in the famous Diego Riviera and Frida Kahlo Studio House (https://inba.gob.mx/recinto/51). The house is very beautiful and has a bridge that symbolizes the connection of love between the hearts of Frida and Diego.

The best day to visit San Ángel is Saturday because there is a art market. But the other days are also very good because there are fewer people and you can visit the galleries with less people.

I recommend you plan an entire morning to walk around San Ángel. Start in the center and let your feet take you towards the Diego Riviera and Frida Kahlo House Studio.

I share to people that book an itinerary with this activity my favorite restaurants in San Ángel.

Afternoon visit Coyoacán

The center of Coyoacán is one of the most beautiful and folkloric places in Mexico City. There are several things you can do here as a tourist but the most famous, without a doubt, is to visit Frida Kahlo's "Casa Azul".

I'm not going to go into too much detail about the museum and the house. What I do want to emphasize is that there are many people and you have to make your reservation in advance. The dynamics of the museum has been changing so it is important that you prepare your visit: https://www.museofridakahlo.org.mx/es/el-museo/

The Casa Azul is the house where Frida Kahlo grew up. If you want to know more about her, the best thing you can do is watch the movie Frida (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120679/).

I really like eating at the Coyoacán Market. Normally all tourists go to the market to see the handicrafts and buy souvenirs. Inside the market there are several food restaurants that offer "Comida Corrida". I recommend you go to one of those. The cost of a "Comida Corrida" (which is a 3 course menu)  is around 80 pesos.

The other place that I highly recommend is the tortas (sandwiches) at La Barraca Valenciana (https://g.page/BarracaValenciana?share). They are delicious!

You can also go to Los Danzantes in Parque Centenario. This restaurant is more fancy-gourmet and specializes in Oaxacan food (https://goo.gl/maps/NzKQyaNpophHEzFEA).

There is also a very special cantina that you can visit called La Coyoacana (https://goo.gl/maps/7ufn89ZrRcmWX6ba6). There are usually a lot of people, call to make a reservation or be calm.

In Coyoacan you have to see:

  • 1) La Casa Azul
  • 2) El Mercado de Artesanías de Coyoacan
  • 3) The Centro de Coyocan with the cathedral and surroundings.

Detail

For years I have received many visits from friends and family mainly from Europe and the USA who want to discover Mexico City.

Today a friend from Spain asked me to help her organize a trip to Mexico for her best friend who wants to celebrate her honeymoon in Mexico. So I decided to make this trip itinerary to Mexico City that I hope will serve her and everyone who is reading this trip.

Mexico City is a special and unique place in the world. Maybe I think so because I am originally from Mexico City and have spent most of my life there. I spent my childhood and adolescence in a house very close to the center of Coyoacán in the southern part of the city. Later I moved to the Condesa neighborhood and spent a few years living there with roommates from Spain, Italy and Austria.

What is this itinerary about?

I am going to try to guide you so that you visit the places you have to see in Mexico City and also visit others that I am personally going to recommend. I will try to organize the itinerary so that every moment is worth it. Mexico City is so big and so diverse that obviously we will not have time to see everything and you will most likely want to return later. There will be a lot of tourist activities and also a lot of delicious food!

The first day I am going to recommend that you go to dinner at a taqueria. The reason is that I don't know what time you arrive and usually everyone arrives very tired and sometimes late.

On the second day I am going to recommend you to visit the pyramids of Teotihuacan. Without a doubt, it is one of the places that you cannot miss. The visit is quite tiring, and in my experience, many prefer to do it on the first day. If you don't want to do something so tiring the first day you can always change the order of the activities for each day.

On the third day I am going to recommend you to visit Coyoacán and San Angel to the south of the city. This part is very famous because the renowned artist Frida Kahlo and her husband Diego Riviera grew up here. I highly recommend you watch the Sandra Hayek movie.

On the fourth day I am going to recommend you to walk around the Condesa, the Roma and the City Center. There are so many things to see. I will try to guide you to see the best ones.

On the fifth day I am going to recommend you to go to Xochimilco and the chinampas.
