You will want to book a 4x4 or anything other than a small car to make your way on this adventure. The roads are notorious for being bad with potholes and the further you go the worse the roads tend to get especially during the rainy season. And not all are paved.
After booking your vehicle, you are ready to leave the country's capital of San Jose and head out in search of Costa Rica's beloved and national animal. Sloths, sloths, and more sloths! Costa Rica is all about its amazing wildlife and only 30 minutes from San Jose's airport is your opportunity to see these extraordinary creatures up close and personal, even walking through their sloth gardens as they hang above you. I am very familiar with this secret location as I was their sloth mama for almost a year and am excited to share this special place with all those that book this itinerary. You are guaranteed to see plenty of sloths and it's the perfect way to start your trip with the healing energy of Costa Rica's spectacular animals.

From San Jose is a 100 km drive that can be done in 1 hour and 40 minutes. If you drive at traffic time you can do around 2 and a half hours.
Puntarenas is far more than a ferry stop. Get out and explore the shores of Puntarenas and feel the fresh air against your skin. The lighthouse stands tall at the end with piers to walk out as fishing boats head out into the waters. It is a place to experience the festive street foods of Costa Rica and to feel like a local. The beach is long and flat, perfect for walking, and if it is during the week, you will feel like you have the beautiful beach all to yourself with such freedom. Spend some time enjoying the water here as the beaches ahead of you are all so different. Just be cautious of the water and waves here and don't venture out too far in the water.
Puntarenas has amazing fresh seafood and restaurants across from the shores of the beach, but don't walk past the food trucks and vendors. That is the true street food and favorite treats of the people. Churchills are Costa Rica's elevated snow cones, they shave it fresh as you stand there, topped with everything imaginable if you want.
Puntarenas is known for their Vigorones and served in an Instagram-worthy photo, wrapped inside a banana leaf filled to the brim with yuca, pork, cabbage, and chimichurri. Walking their colorful sidewalk along the shore as the palms sway in the breeze is a breath of fresh air and a sense of simply just being in the moment, that all is perfect.
