Eddie

I discovered Ponferrada while walking the Camino de Santiago, and it quickly became one of my favorite stops. The majesty of the Templar Castle took my breath away, and the city itself seemed incredibly clean and welcoming with friendly people.

Day 1: Ponferrada: Visit the Castle and the Old Town

Visit to the Templar Castle in Ponferrada and the Old Town.

Tomorrow: Visit to the Templar Castle

We will begin our journey by visiting the iconic Templar Castle of Ponferrada, an imposing fortress that overlooks the city. This castle, dating back to the 12th century, offers a fascinating insight into Templar history and breathtaking panoramic views of Ponferrada and its surroundings. Explore its walls, towers, and courtyards, and immerse yourself in the medieval atmosphere that surrounds it. Every corner of the castle tells a story, from the ancient dungeons to the armory room. Don't miss the opportunity to visit its library, which houses an impressive collection of manuscripts and historical documents.

Be sure to check the castle's hours and events on the official website: https://castillodelostemplarios.com/

Noon: Lunch at Mesón del Tres Portiñas

After a morning exploring the castle, we will head to Mesón del Tres Portiñas, a place we discovered thanks to a kind local lady. We were having a beer at the end of one of the stages of the Camino de Santiago, and she overheard us asking where we could eat well. She recommended this cozy restaurant, known for its excellent local cuisine and traditional atmosphere.

Here we tried the most delicious octopus we have ever tasted in our lives, according to the unanimous opinion of all pilgrims. The menu includes three types of octopus: Galician style, grilled, and in sauce. Of course, we ordered all three, and each was an unforgettable culinary experience.

Afternoon and Evening: Stroll through the Old Town

In the afternoon, we will venture into the old town of Ponferrada. This charming neighborhood is full of cobblestone streets, picturesque squares, and historic buildings. Begin your tour at the Town Hall Square, the heart of the city's social life, where you can enjoy a coffee at a terrace and watch the daily hustle and bustle. Don't miss the Basilica of La Encina, a beautiful example of Renaissance architecture with its impressive main altarpiece. As you stroll, discover small shops, craft stores, and local taverns that offer you a glimpse into authentic Bercian life. The night in the old town is magical, with lights illuminating the historic buildings and creating a charming atmosphere.

Detail

Ponferrada, located in the charming region of El Bierzo, is a destination that will transport you to another era with its impressive historical and cultural heritage. At the heart of this city stands the majestic Castle of the Templars, a living testimony of one of the most enigmatic and fascinating orders in medieval history: the Knights Templar.

The Castle of the Templars, built in the 12th century, is one of the best-preserved Templar fortresses in Europe. This imposing structure not only served as a defensive bastion but also as an administrative and religious center for the order in the region. The Templars, known for their bravery and devotion, played a crucial role during the Crusades, protecting pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land and safeguarding important trade and pilgrimage routes, such as the Camino de Santiago.

The history of the Templars is shrouded in mystery and legend. Founded in 1119 by Hugh de Payens and other French knights, the order dedicated itself to protecting Christian pilgrims and holy sites. Over time, they acquired immense wealth and power, which eventually led to their persecution and dissolution in the early 14th century. However, their legacy endures in places like the Castle of Ponferrada, where their influence can still be felt.

Visiting the Castle of the Templars in Ponferrada is like opening a history book and immersing yourself in its pages. Its sturdy walls, defensive towers, and well-guarded secrets offer a unique experience for history and architecture enthusiasts. From the heights of its towers, you can enjoy unparalleled panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscape, understanding why this place was so strategic for the Templars. In addition to its historical wealth, Ponferrada and El Bierzo offer a perfect mix of culture, gastronomy, and nature.

The surroundings of the city are filled with natural beauty, from the spectacular landscape of Las Médulas, with its ancient Roman gold mines, to the serene Valley of Silence. The hospitality of its people and the richness of its gastronomy, with typical dishes such as botillo and octopus, make this region a must-visit destination.I invite you to discover Ponferrada and its emblematic Castle of the Templars.

Immerse yourself in history, explore its charming corners, and let yourself be seduced by the magic of this unique region of Spain. A trip to Ponferrada is not just a visit to a place, but an experience that will connect you with the deepest essence of our history and culture. Come and live the Templar adventure in Ponferrada!
