The town was founded on May 26, 1907 in what was a Tarahumaran ranch known as Nariachi, and is an important stop of the Chepe train route in the Copper Canyon. Creel has been declared the Magic Town of Mexico because it is in a naturally beautiful areas. In the surroundings there are tourist attractions such as the Basaseachi waterfall, the Cusárare waterfall and the Arareko lake.
