Explore Chiapas to the Maximum wiht this Self-Guided Travel Itinerary
Travel Designer Review:
It is important to explain the travel time and distances involved in seeing these two attractions from San Cristobal de las Casas. First, you travel about 130 kilometers to reach El Chiflón waterfall, then 90 kilometers to reach Montebello Lakes, and finally 147 kilometers to return to San Cristobal de las Casas. The average speed is 50 kilometers per hour, so the first leg takes approximately 2.5 hours, the second leg takes 1.5 hours, and the third leg takes 3 hours.
Now that you know what the tour entails, you can imagine the advantages of doing it as part of a tour versus driving yourself in a rented car.
The main advantage of taking a tour is safety. Tour operators are usually familiar with the road and have a lot of experience doing the tour. The disadvantage is that you will be subject to the conditions and timing of the tour. Most shared tours depart from San Cristobal at 8 am and return around 6 pm.
The main advantage of doing it on your own in a rented car is that you will have complete freedom to visit the place and move at your own pace. The disadvantage is that you must be very careful when driving on those roads and not getting lost along the way.
The most enjoyable way to do the visit, but also the most expensive, is by hiring a private tour.
El Chiflón waterfall is beautiful, it is huge, and you can see it up close. A waterfall over 120 meters high pours into a turquoise blue river in the middle of the jungle. Don't forget to bring your camera, and I recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
Montebello Lakes are a National Park protected by UNESCO with more than 59 lakes of different colors surrounded by forest. Visitors mainly come to admire the nature of the place.

The following suggested activities and notes are not included in the reservation of this itinerary. The Travel Designer included them so that you can optionally do them on your own during your trip.
Do you want to discover Chiapas in depth? This tour is one of the most comprehensive that you can do in Chiapas. Each day, we will make the most of our time so you can see as much as possible.
During the first few days, we will dedicate our time to exploring Tuxtla Gutierrez and El Aguacero, one of the lesser-known natural attractions near Tuxtla Gutierrez. Of course, we will also visit the Sumidero Canyon.
Afterwards, we will go to San Cristobal, using it as a base to visit indigenous communities, as well as the El Chiflon waterfall and the Montebello Lakes.
After seeing these wonderful places, we will head north to visit Agua Azul, Palenque, and Misol-ha. This area of Chiapas is also incredible.
Lastly, we will stay in the city of Palenque for a few days in order to visit Yaxchilan and Bonampak. These are some of the most incredible ruins in all of Mexico, as they are submerged in the jungle.
All activities on the itinerary are suggestions and are not included in the cost if you choose to make a reservation. The only thing included are the hotels that I recommend. I carefully selected these hotels. They are hotels that I know, are of quality, comfortable, and have very good reviews. If you make a reservation for this itinerary, I will provide you with additional tips to enhance your trip.
