Explore Chiapas to the Maximum wiht this Self-Guided Travel Itinerary
Travel Designer Review:
This activity is recommended to be done in the morning after breakfast and lasts from 4 to 6 hours.
Many people prefer not to spend so much time on their trip to Chiapas in Tuxtla Gutierrez and its surroundings. Personally, I think there are things that are really worth it, like visiting El Aguacero Waterfall. This activity is recommended to be done in the morning after breakfast.
For those who prefer to go directly to San Cristobal de las Casas, I recommend checking out other trips that I designed where I shorten the stay in Tuxtla. In some, I suggest going directly from the airport to Sumidero Canyon and then to San Cristobal de las Casas.
El Aguacero is a natural park located about 50 kilometers east of Tuxtla Gutierrez. The main attraction is a waterfall that falls through a canyon into the La Venta River. The road to El Aguacero is very fun and the natural landscape is beautiful.
First, you arrive by car at the park entrance on a dirt road. The entrance is located at the top of a canyon that you have to walk down. The views on the descent are incredible.
Once you reach the bottom of the canyon, you have to walk upstream along the river. El Aguacero Waterfall is located between two canyons through which the La Venta River flows. The water reaches knee height and swimming is not necessary. The water temperature is very refreshing and the natural landscape is beautiful.
Finally, you reach the waterfall, don't forget your camera because the waterfall is very beautiful. Additionally, you can get into the water jets and climb some rocks. If you go with your partner, you can get romantic and take a very nice photo.
This visit is suitable for friends, families, and young couples. It requires some mountain hiking and walking in the river. It does not require much effort, but it is not recommended for elderly people or those with low physical fitness.
It is recommended to bring insect repellent, sunscreen, and hiking shoes. If you don't want to get your shoes wet, bring a backpack and water shoes. I also recommend bringing water and a light snack for the hike.
Please be a responsible traveler and do not litter in the park. It is very sad to see how some tourists bring all kinds of plastic and aluminum containers that they later leave on the trail or throw in the river. Such a beautiful landscape should not be polluted, such an inspiring moment should not be tarnished with plastic or aluminum containers. Try to be a Zero Waste traveler and take care of the environment.
It depends on how tired you are, I'm going to recommend some activities.
1) Visit the Cristo de Copoyá and the Murals of the town near Tuxtla Gutiérrez
On top of the mountain that surrounds Tuxtla Gutiérrez, you can see the Cristo de Copayá, which resembles the famous Christ the Redeemer in Brazil. The trip is a bit long but worth it. The view from where the Cristo Copoyá is located towards the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez is very good.
On the way to the Cristo de Copoyá, you will pass through the town of Copoyá where you can find some murals on the houses. Personally, I liked the murals more than the visit to the Cristo de Copoyá. I will leave you some photos so you can see how wonderful they are.
2) Go eat at Las Pichanchas
There are two cultural things that I think you should experience in Tuxtla Gutiérrez. The first one is the Chiapaneca cuisine that you can enjoy at a famous restaurant called Las Pichanchas (http://www.laspichanchas.com.mx/). Surely there are other good Chiapaneca food restaurants in Tuxtla. I recommend Las Pichanchas because it is a guarantee and a favorite among locals and tourists alike. The Tuxtecos usually celebrate birthdays and other family parties in this restaurant.
3) Visit La Mariba Park in the afternoon
The second one is to see La Marimba Park in downtown Tuxtla. In the afternoon, when the sun sets, a band begins to play in the central kiosk of La Marimba Park. Locals, especially the elderly, dance around the center and show off their best moves. For me, it is very beautiful to see how people rejoice in such a healthy and joyful way.

The following suggested activities and notes are not included in the reservation of this itinerary. The Travel Designer included them so that you can optionally do them on your own during your trip.
Do you want to discover Chiapas in depth? This tour is one of the most comprehensive that you can do in Chiapas. Each day, we will make the most of our time so you can see as much as possible.
During the first few days, we will dedicate our time to exploring Tuxtla Gutierrez and El Aguacero, one of the lesser-known natural attractions near Tuxtla Gutierrez. Of course, we will also visit the Sumidero Canyon.
Afterwards, we will go to San Cristobal, using it as a base to visit indigenous communities, as well as the El Chiflon waterfall and the Montebello Lakes.
After seeing these wonderful places, we will head north to visit Agua Azul, Palenque, and Misol-ha. This area of Chiapas is also incredible.
Lastly, we will stay in the city of Palenque for a few days in order to visit Yaxchilan and Bonampak. These are some of the most incredible ruins in all of Mexico, as they are submerged in the jungle.
All activities on the itinerary are suggestions and are not included in the cost if you choose to make a reservation. The only thing included are the hotels that I recommend. I carefully selected these hotels. They are hotels that I know, are of quality, comfortable, and have very good reviews. If you make a reservation for this itinerary, I will provide you with additional tips to enhance your trip.
